Every manuscript arrives with its own logic, its own ambitions. I work across the full range of academic editorial services — from early developmental support to final proofread — and I adapt the scope of my involvement to what your work actually needs.
Academic Monographs & Book Manuscripts
I have worked with authors preparing books for Routledge, Bloomsbury Academic, Cambridge University Press, Princeton University Press, Amsterdam University Press, and Peter Lang, among others — from early manuscript assessment through developmental editing and line editing, in preparation for submission or in response to editorial review.
- Manuscript assessment and editorial letter
- Developmental editing: structure, argument arc, chapter relationships
- Line editing: precision, register, scholarly voice
- Introduction and conclusion review
- Bibliography and notes formatting
Journal Articles & Book Chapters
Editing for journal article and book chapter submissions, with attention to the particular conventions of each venue. Whether you are revising after peer review, preparing a submission for the first time, or adapting a dissertation chapter for publication, I can help you present your work in its strongest form.
- Argument and structure review
- Line editing for clarity and scholarly register
- Abstract editing
- Citation and footnote review
- Response-to-reviewers support
Dissertation Editing
Doctoral dissertations carry a particular weight — years of research and thought compressed into a form that must satisfy a committee, a field, and often a future press. I work with dissertation writers at every stage: from early chapter drafts where the argument is still finding its shape, through to final polish before the defense.
- Developmental reading and feedback on argument structure, theoretical framing, and chapter logic
- Line editing for scholarly clarity, register, and flow
- Proofreading for grammar, consistency, and style guide compliance
- Citation and reference list review
- Support for non-native English writers navigating Anglophone academic conventions
I am particularly well suited to dissertations in humanistic disciplines: film and media studies, rhetoric, depth psychology, mythology, anthropology, philosophy, religious studies, Classics, and adjacent fields. I have also edited many manuscripts that engage with scientific or medical research — I cannot verify the data or the math, but I can make the English parts shine, and I have considerable experience translating complex clinical terminology into language a broader public can understand.
Many of my doctoral clients become long-term collaborators — returning through the revision process, into postdoctoral writing, and across the arc of a scholarly career.
Proofreading
Final-stage proofreading for manuscripts that have completed substantive editing and are ready for submission or publication. I correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax; flag inconsistencies in terminology and formatting; and verify compliance with the specified style guide.
Style guides: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 17, Turabian, AMA, and publisher house styles. US or UK English.
Citation Formatting & Bibliography Preparation
Comprehensive review and correction of in-text citations, footnotes, endnotes, and reference lists. I check for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with the specified style guide, and I flag missing information for your attention. APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 17, Turabian, or a publication's custom style. US or UK English. Reference lists, footnotes, in-text citations, bibliography preparation. Available as a standalone project or as part of a broader editing engagement.
Script Doctoring & Writing Coaching
Drawing on years of work on film and television sets as a script supervisor, I offer script doctoring and writing coaching for screenwriters and documentary filmmakers. I understand how stories move — and where they stall. Whether you need structural diagnosis on a feature draft, a scene-by-scene read, or ongoing coaching through a writing project, I bring both story instinct and editorial precision to the work.
- Feature and short screenplay assessment and structural notes
- Scene and dialogue editing
- Documentary treatment and pitch development
- Ongoing writing coaching and accountability
- Script continuity review
Archival & Documentary Production Research
I have worked as an archival producer on major documentary productions — managing moving images, still photography, audio, and supplementary materials through the full pipeline of research, rights, and clearances. I bring deep familiarity with (and proximity to) the collections of NARA and the Library of Congress, including their moving image, still photography, and audio holdings, as well as a multitude of specialty archives in the US and Europe. Recent credits include The Bloody Hundredth (Apple TV+), Demon in the White House (HBO Max), Kennedy (History Channel), and The Seat (Netflix).
This expertise extends directly into academic research contexts. I support scholars whose work draws on primary visual and auditory sources, and I assist with the rigorous citation and contextualization those materials require.
For historical and archival research in Virginia, I also hold an ongoing appointment with the Clarke County Historical Association, where my work encompasses primary source research, community history, and editorial work for the association's Proceedings.
Questions
Frequently asked
Do you work with non-native English writers?
Yes — a significant portion of my clients are scholars writing in English as a second or third language, particularly from Scandinavian and other European institutions. I approach this work with attention to both linguistic accuracy and the preservation of each writer's distinctive scholarly voice. I do not homogenize or Americanize; I clarify.
What is your turnaround time?
Turnaround depends on project scope and my current availability. For shorter pieces (articles, chapters), I typically work within two to three weeks. Dissertations and manuscripts are planned individually. I ask that you reach out before a deadline crunch; I prefer to give your work the attention it deserves rather than rush it.
How do you handle confidentiality?
All client manuscripts are treated as strictly confidential. I do not share, discuss, or reference client work without explicit written permission. A non-disclosure clause is standard in every service agreement.
Can you edit in a field outside your areas of expertise?
My primary areas of scholarly expertise are film and media studies, rhetoric, depth psychology, mythology, anthropology, religious studies, philosophy, Classics, and Nordic studies. My editorial work extends well beyond these fields. I have edited many manuscripts that engage with scientific or medical research — while I cannot verify the data or the math, I can make the English parts shine, and I have considerable experience translating complex medical concepts and clinical terminology into language a broader public can understand. If your field is highly specialized, please raise this at the consultation stage so we can assess the fit together.
